Members of South Shields Chess Club were pleased to attend the Ocean Road Mela on 9 August 2026, supporting the Y&C Aspire Group and their Friday Night Junior Chess Club held at the OCEAN ROAD Community Centre. Contact Tariq Jaman Y&C Aspire
The event gave local families the chance to learn more about chess and its benefits for young people, including improved concentration, confidence and problem-solving skills.
The fifth annual Ocean Road Mela – meaning festival in Hindi – attracted hundreds of visitors.
The road, which is home to numerous restaurants serving cuisine from all over the world, was packed with food stalls, music, children’s activities, trade stalls, crafts, and entertainers.
Thanks to Alan Smith , Dave Patterson , Alan Johnson , Polina and Eddie for giving up part of their Sunday to spread the word about chess in our community.
