Club Success in the Forest Hall Congress – Paul Bielby wins the Open!

The low turnout at the Forest Hall congress last weekend resulted in the Open and Major being combined in one tournament with separate prizes and the Intermediate and Foundation also being combined.

This gave our own Paul Bielby a unique chance to win both the Major and the Open which he took with a great win over Robert Clegg in the last round to leave him tied for first with 4 out of 5. That’s Paul’s pocket money for his Malta holiday sorted then.

Well done too to Brian Towers, who came 3rd in the Major with 3.5, and Gary Hunter, who finished 2nd in a very tough Intermediate with 4. Honourable mention to Eddie Czestochowski with 2 well earned points as one of the lowest graded players in the section.

Just missing out in the Intermediate with 3 out of 5 was Chris Sayers and an honourable mention for Stan Johnson with 2.

Northumbria FIDE Blitz – 2018

This was a great little tournament organized by Tim Wall which attracted 30 players, 5 of them from South Shields, for an afternoon of blitz in the function room of the Chillingham pub in Newcastle. As a bonus it was FIDE rated, so all players who didn’t previously have FIDE Ids will now have them, all for 2 quid a head! More power to Tim’s elbow and here’s hoping he organizes more of these.

It was a pretty successful afternoon for the Shields players. Piotr Niedbal just missed out on the prizes. He was in 3rd place going into the last round and needed a draw to maintain 3rd but lost to Edward Dodds who overtook him for 3rd with Piotr finishing in 4th on 6/9.

Paul Bielby was top senior (over 65) on 4.5/9.

Eddie Czestochowski and Gary Hunter (FIDE ID = 466590) finished half a point behind Paul on 4/9 and Asanga Gunasekera (FIDE ID = 466581) was 3 points further back.

Fleeting Moment of Mid Table Mediocrity for 2nd Team

Tuesday’s draw against Leam Lane in the NCA first division has boosted the second team up to 6th position – exactly half way! Of course looking at the “Games Played” column tells you this won’t last but meantime Eddie has leant on Will to update the NCA website so we can bask in our temporary glory.

This is how the table looks –

The Wanderer Returns

Last night Dave Patterson drove half way across England to score a win for the second team’s crucial match against Gosforth Regents in division one of the Northumberland Chess Association league to give the team their second draw. This takes the team to 6 points (2 wins and 2 draws) from eight matches and gives the team a real chance of avoiding relegation.

South Shields Rapid Play Tournament 2016

South Shields Rapidplay Chess Champions

Chess players from all over the North East came together at the Customs House, South Shields to compete for the honour of becoming the Northumberland and Durham Rapid Play Chess Champion. South Shields Chess Club this year are celebrating its 150th Anniversary, so our members organised a special Rapid Play Chess Tournament, incorporating Northumberland and Durham Chess Association Rapid play Championships.

75 players, from as far a field as Edinburgh, Carlisle and Manchester were attracted to the event. With many more sending in apologies due to holidays and conflicts with other tournaments, we may have had to limit the numbers but fortunately it all worked out in the end. It was the first time this particular cultural venue had held an event of type. There were other events been held at the Venue, a craft fair on the riverside and a burger stand giving visitors plenty of options at lunch time. The competition was graded and was run on single competition basis which enabled 9 rounds to be fitted in during the day, so there was plenty of chess played. Each match was played on a 10 minute plus 5 second increment.

The Eventual overall champion was FM Charlie Storey. The Major Champion was Mike Smith and the Minor Champion was 8 year old Yichen Han. The general consensus was that most people enjoyed the congress and there seems to be a hunger for more of these one day congresses. South Shields Chess Club would like to thank Lara Barnes and Alex McFarlane  for all their efforts and for all the entrants to helping to make the event a very memorable day.

Website Success

The website has only been up a week and it’s already had its first success. A new possible member Charlie came to play chess. He used to play many years as a junior in the Wolverhampton Chess League and now with more time on his hands , he has dusted off the old chess books, had a go online and now wants to try his luck against real people.

Last week another long lost member Allan Blackburn has returned to blow the cobwebs from his mind. He told us stories of playing against Lance Oliver, a stalwart of times gone by, a real champion of Chess. My goal is to bring back some of those long lost memories of the club, and it’s great that things are already starting to happen.
