You might have thought this was too ridiculous to believe , but some people did  .

We placed a story in the Local South Shields Gazette  and they very kindly printed it  , our aim was simply to raise profile of Chess in South Tyneside and to announce the launch of our 150th Celebration Events  this year,

Here is a wonderful image of the Structure we had planned to temporarily move .

The Groyne

This image of THE GROYNE  was  taken By John Short . He takes many brilliant Images of South Tyneside , you can view them on his facebook site called SEE SOUTH TYNESIDE DIFFERENTLY.

Last year I tried to persuade our club members that Magnus Carlsen was great friends with Joe McElderry and that Magnus was taking style tips from Joe in exchange for teaching him chess , it raised a smile but no takers .

Sunderland University Wins Prizes at British Universities Chess Championship 2016

UoS Chess Team
(L to R ) Gediminas Balys, Dominik Schwarz , Thong Luu , Piotr Niedbal

Dominik Schwarz is currently studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources at the University of Sunderland and a regular Chess Team Player for South Shields this year. He was also a driving force behind the setting up of the First Chess Society at the University, after discovering a bunch of like minded chess players huddled over a board.

Together they  mustered up a team comprising of Piotr Niedbal , Dominik Schwarz , GedimInas Balys and Thong Luu and decided to enter the British Universities Chess Championship 2016, this year held in Birmingham .

Entered into the Shield Division , the team finished in a very creditable third place out of 18 entrants. Finish closely behind Imperial and Warwick. Thong Luu playing on Board 4 won an Individual Gold Medal with a score of 10 from 10 games, with Piotr Niedbal, board 1 taking a Silver Medal with a score of 7.5 out 10.  It was a great team effort .

The competition was run over 2 days in a Quickplay Format comprising 10 rounds of 25 minutes plus 10 second increments.

Member Insights

Here are selection of the recollections of some of our members past and present .

Durham League Division 2

South Shields v Hartlepool

1. Brian Towers 1-0 Bernie Price
2. Dave Patterson 1-0 Dave Lowcock
3. Eddie Czestochowski ½-½ Dave Smith
4. Chris Sayers 1-0 Mark Priest
5. Alan Blackburn ½-½ Eddie Glass

A South Shields 4 -1 Win now sets up an interesting situation in their next game. A Win would be needed against Hetton Lyons 2 in order to swop positions with them and finish in the top 5 of the Division . That would then mean they then play all those top 4 teams again in the second part of the season.

Northumberland Division 3 Result

South Shields C 4-1 Forest Hall Ensigns

Dominik Schwarz 1-0 Roy Perrier
Ben Wood 0-1 John Wall Jnr
Stan Johnson 1-0 Jamie Mcintosh
Mike Savin 1-0 Xu Weiming
Brendan Glasper 1-0 David Ridley

South Shields had a great result here  , it would need more results like this and a bit of a collapse by the teams above them if they stand any chance of progression,

150th Anniversary Celebration Year 2016

The South Shields Chess Club had its first open Chess night on Monday the 1st of October 1866, at the Mechanics Institute in Ocean Road, South Shields. This information was verified with the help of the British Newspaper Archives and in particular to an article in the South Shields Gazette printed that simply said “It was hoped that there will be a good muster of not only the lovers, but the learners of the game”.

Our Club , like many others around the UK are kept running by enthusiastic volunteers  held together by the common interest of Chess . It is an amazing Achievement that the club has reached this milestone .

This year we are running a number of events that are aimed strengthen the growing popularity of the game  . We are hoping that this will increase participation not only in our local club , but in clubs around the region and around the UK .

Bobby Fischer , considered to be one of the greatest Chess World Champions of all time ,once famously said    “Chess is Life ”

Please tell us what benefits you believe chess has brought to your life .

If you would like to be kept informed the events we have planned , please send us an email and also tell us why you believe Chess is Important to you .

Mid Season Report December 2015

Half way through the 2015/16 Season . South Shields are holding their own in the top two Northumberland Leagues .

South Shields A Team are in third place in the Northumberland 1st Division , however they hold a game in hand over the current top team Gosforth Empire and have yet to play against this formidable team .

South Shields B Team are currently Joint top of Division 2 with Leam Comets but have a game in hand .  It is going to be an exciting run-in  particularly as South Shields B last game this season will pitch these two teams together.

South Shields C are currently Joint Bottom of Division 3 , but have a great chance to pull further up the table as they now re-engage each of the teams they have played the season in the reverse fixture .

South Shields are also fielding a team in the Second Division of the Durham League and although they are second bottom there is not much of a points spread between the top and bottom , and we are hopeful of a better second half to the Season ,

South Shields Teams  currently hold first and second place in the Ron Evers Rapid Play Event after 2 rounds  , all to play for in the subsequent 4 rounds .

There were many good performances in these results  , lets hope we have good fortune in 2016 .
