South Shields A 3.5-1.5 Forest Hall Admirals

John Boyd 1-0 Martin Seeber
Joe Watson 1-0 Manoj Aurora
Paul Bielby 1-0 Mark Younger
Ian Maughan 0-1 Mike Smith
Brian Towers ½-½ John Wall

Paul was first to finish, winning a pawn in the early middlegame and seemed to effortlessly convert his advantage. Joe by his own admission was ‘outplayed in the opening’ and was reduced to shuffling his pieces around before pulling out a devastating combination to turn the tables. Brian was pressing for most of the game but settled for a draw as time was running out. Ian sacked (or lost?) a pawn early on and had some initiative but couldn’t break through and eventually was ground down by a dogged opponent. John was apparently ‘a very patient player’ in the words of his opponent who marvelled at how he could win without moving one of his bishops.

Thursday 29th January 2015

The C team lost out to the University team who outgraded them overall. Asanga was last to finish after a tense struggle against a strong Kenyan WFM . Mike Savin acting captain in the absence of Stan Johnson had an epic battle against his opposite number. Gary Hunter had a relatively quick win but unfortunately Alan and Brendan lost out on boards 4 and 5 .

Tynedale Reivers 1.5 – 3.5 South Shields B

David Wrigley 1-0 Dave Patterson
Derek Blair 0-1 Kevin Rowden
Alex Ashworth ½-½ Colin Campbell
Philip Taylor 0-1 Eddie Czestochowski
David Scott 0-1 Ben Wood

Tuesday 27th October 2015

Eddie was first to finish, an early Knight for Rook Exchange followed by a rapid swapping of pieces led to a position where his opponent had no real way of staying in the game and had to eventually reluctantly resign. Ben finished next, he was on top for most of his game which included a controversial incident, where his opponent moved his rook first in the castling process. Colin drew his game, he was 6 pawns to Bishop down, but with both Queens still on the board and a superior time advantage, his opponent not wanting to lose on time accepted the draw. Dave Patterson, under the cosh from the opening against a very strong player, eventually threw in the towel succumbing to the thumbscrew pressure being applied.

Kevin was also pressured from the start from a king side attack, his opponent had pawns lodged on the Rook and Bishop 6th rank, but this proved to be a weakness because that left his own King very exposed. At the very end his opponent blundered his Queen which was a bit of a shock given how well he had controlled and played the game up to that point, Kevin getting in to time pressure was hoping for the draw but ended up with a surprise win.

Durham 3-2 South Shields A

Thomas Eggleston 1-0 John Boyd
Ken Neat ½-½ Joe Watson
Symon Palucha 0-1 Paul Bielby
George Gazis ½-½ Simon McGuinness

Wednesday 21st October 2015

Ian Maughan went down in a hail of gunfire on the White side of a Scotch Opening while Simon McGuinness drew on the black side of a Scotch . Paul Bielby again produced the goods in a middle game where his opponents pieces were treading on each other’s toes . Joe Watson and Ken Neat turned into trench warfare in a blocked position and was drawn . On Top board the board was on fire with many pieces being en prise simultaneously . John Boyd just lost out in a wild game .
Well done to Paul and Joe against strong opposition .

Lance Oliver Picking up the Friends Bowl in 1955

Lance oLIVER

A big thank you goes out to  Peter Locke , a member of the South Shields Chess Club in the 1950s . We believe it was taken in either 1955 or 1956 . Lance Oliver is receiving the trophy for the  club championship Friends Bowl ,on the right is Jack Bishop  who was a teacher at the Boys Grammar school . Peter is the  tall thin young man wearing glasses

This brought back memories for  Simon McGuiness , our current Chairman who occasionally used to take a chess set to The Vigilant and play him  ,  he remembers Mr Bishop was a keen Pipe Smoker .

Another player on the photograph is Keith Lundy , who went on to win the trophy in 1961 .

If the picture brings back memories please contact us to share them.
